What is the secret to holistic wellness?  Let’s start with hyacinths.  Years ago a dear friend shared hyacinths with me.  Not just any hyacinths, but these hyacinths:

If, of thy mortal goods, thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves
alone to thee are left,
Sell one and from the dole,
Buy Hyacinths to feed thy soul
     – Muslihuddin Sadi

In the 13th Century Persian Poet Sadi must have been crazy or a genius to suggest that someone nearing starvation would sell one of his or her last two loaves of bread to buy flowers, even if they are magnificent flowers.  But, the reality is that we all need flowers in our lives to nourish us as much as we need amazing food.  We need to feed our souls and not just our bodies.

After all, isn’t that what we all want?  To feed our souls? When we seek a path to holistic wellness, aren’t we really seeking a place where our soul sings out?  Where we are fulfilled in every way (body, mind, and spirit)?  Where we are satisfied and our best, actualized self?  Where we have energy and passion and vitality and total health?

Even if you answered some or all of those questions in the affirmative you might be wondering what these lovely hyacinths gifted to me so many years ago have to do with kale.  These, my friends, are the two secrets to holistic wellness.

Secret one: maximize how you feed your body… kale.  

And secret two: maximize how you feed your soul… hyacinths.

If we can balance the things that nourish our body (what we eat and drink) and the things that nourish our soul (our relationships, career, home environment, physical activity, and spirituality, among others), then we can be the best version of ourselves.
