November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Fayette County has a significant presence of Type 2 Diabetes, have you been told you are diabetic or prediabetic?

The Uniontown Area YMCA is offering an amazing, evidence-based program called Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). In the DPP program, trained lifestyle coaches facilitate a small group of adults to discuss behavior changes that can improve the health of participants.

Research has shown that YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58% and by 71% among adults aged 60 years or older. But this program is available for any age as long as you meet the requirements to qualify.

Aqua Aerobics

All Fitness Levels/Swimming Skills Not Required

These low-impact exercise classes use the water buoyancy to reduce the amount of stress placed on your joints. Movement is possible with little or no pressure on the body. Support and resistance from the water ensures participants will get their hearts pumping, muscles strengthened, and increase joint range of motion. Tools such as water noodles, water bells, and kickboards add variety and intensity to this workout. The shallow and deep ends of the pool can be used according to each individual’s ability. These classes are taught by certified and trained instructors. Water temperature in our pool is kept around 82 degrees to ensure a great workout.

Water Walking

All Fitness Levels/Swimming Skills Not Required

 

Water Walking is an intermediate water exercise class. It includes exercises to develop cardiovascular strength, joint flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, balance, and posture. This class is a great class for complete body fitness! Classes are held in the shallow end of the swimming pool. These classes are taught by certified and trained instructors. Water temperature in our pool is kept around 82 degrees to ensure a great workout.

Aqua Zumba®

This fun program integrates the Zumba® philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness disciplines and blends it all together into an exhilarating pool class. Classes are held in the shallow end of the swimming pool. These classes are taught by trained Zumba® instructors. Water temperature in our pool is kept around 82 degrees to ensure a great workout.
